Actually, I/C's and TPA's/SI's always should be pushing for settlement good economy or bad. Usually what happens is that when the "economy" takes a big down fall-claims go up.
As people are laid off, those who have feared for their job and thus put off filing claims, do so after the layoff. Sooo, the claim filings go up and even more incentive to settle. Also one must consider if the adjusting agency is on a "fiscal" year or a "calendar" year. For instance, over my entire career, I would dread the last 3 months of the policy period as there was a slave driver pushing the C/A's for closures at any cost, including overtime, etc. I know I used to DREAD October through December due to this practice.
There is NEVER a good enough reason to keep claims open any longer than necessary--it's not good for anyone involved. I remember "back in the day" my caseload may have consisted of 300 plus claims at any given time. Unlike some C/A's (I don't like to label or judge) I would close, close, settle - settle, no matter what time of year or crunch for deadlines that were dished out to us.
If you really want to hear something "funny," well here goes:
The incentives offered to C/A's to settle and close files are:
1) Casual/Jeans day -and- 2) A Pizza party
Believe me, pizza didn't sway me one way or the other, nor did wearing jeans make me do a better job or close more claims. Sheer silliness; but you wouldn't believe how many others bought into this crap!
Feelin it: I'm bored outa my gourd as well, as they say "idle hands are the devil's workshop." In other words, more time to think, esp., when we are already so caught up in the crap we've been through and the unknown, which is what I absolutely cannot tolerate. Give me some bad news and I'll deal with it--as long as "I" know where I stand. When you are stuck in "limbo" you cannot accurately compile a "game plan," and it stinks!
I don't know about you, but the way my mind works is that I always envistion the worst, to make my current situation seen a bit lighter. That coupled with the fact that I HAVE been through the worst, I'm often on the "fight or flight" pattern of thinking, otherwise known as "anxiety" to the umptenth degree...
I hate to tell you that things get better with time, because the longer it takes, this is where we land. I wish I could help you out a little more.
Please take care, and try to remember "--the darkest hour is just before dawn..." God Bless!
