Can someone clarify. Doesn't the caption mean fixation of joint. If so, if the index finger is ankylosed at 0 degree flexion at the DIP, I assume that means that the finger sticks straight out and is fixed at the neutral position. If this is correct, can the MP and PIP be anything but 0 degrees also?

An ankylosis of the DIP joint in the neutral position (0 degrees) simpply means the distal joint is fixed in the srtraight out extended position. It does not necessarily mean that the entire finger is fixed in a straight position. There may still be motion in the MP and PIP joints. Hold your distal joint straight with your opposite thumb and index finger. Now bend your finger downward.

thanks Andy. Stew and I discussed the merits in the Med forum. If you are bored, give it a peek. Watch out for the Cedaron reports, especially when the norm values on uninjured side come out as a hugmongous DI (HI) under the ankylosis column -slight red flag.
