I sent the following letter to the editors of CA Lawyer magazine because, frankly, I'm more than a little upset that they continue to ignore workers' compensation practice as though it were the red-headed step child of law - I urge more to do the same:
The July issue of California Lawyer had a "special sponsored section" on employment law that completely ignored the single biggest and most fundamental shift in employment law in 2004-2005: SB 899's restructuring of the California Workers' Compensation system.
I know, workers' compensation isn't "real law," even though it has been in existence decades before anyone thought of sexual harassment, age discrimination, FMLA and ADA.
It's about time the California Bar, and those who write about the law, woke up and recognized the single largest privatized social benefit system in the world for what it is - a critical piece of the California economy (indeed - national economy) that is more complex, and more storied, than any other single facet of employment law.
