I would like to send a private message to another poster as I have a very private question to ask. I can't seem to make it work.

First the user you are attempting to PM needs to be able to accept messages.

Profile -> Allow Private Messages: [on]

Then there will be a link under the user to "send private message".

Thank you. I found it, with your help.

Another question. Can I change my user name?

My present user name is an old, discontinued e-mail. Perhaps I can shorten it to just "Chirple" w/out the @earthlink.net.
