David,

Congratulations! From past correspondence I know you've had this in the pipeline for some time and can only imagine how much time and effort you and your staff have spent bringing it to fruition. Given the remarkable % of uptime and overall freedom from glitches WCC has demonstrated to date, I'm confident the transition will be as seamless as possible.

As long as we aren't required to print out our posts and then mail them to you in machine readable form for them to be scanned and then posted, all will be fine.

Two questions though: 1) Will our existing PM's be archived and available for review? 2) Have you considered (or is it possible/practical) in making DVD's of the forums' past content for off-line usage/personal archiving? Perhaps as annual volumes?

In any case, congratulations again and good luck on the roll-out. I'm sure we are all looking forward to seeing what you and your staff have produced and appreciate your commitment and effort to improve and enhance your site rather than just resting on your laurels.

Best of luck.

Later...

Hi Art -

1) Yes, your PMs will remain. We are not taking these forums off line, they just will be read only.
2) No, did not consider making DVDs of the past content since the content (aka data) is contained in many complex database tables - making DVDs would not do anyone any good unless they set up databases to read the data, and knew the structure and also knew how to set up relationships. Like I mentioned above, these forums will not be taken down, just made read only - you will still be able to search and view old content.

Thanks David.

Re: The DVD's, I was thinking more on the order of converting to PDF's rather than duplicating & maintaining the threads in your DB's native format. One could highlight, annotate, bookmark and edit etc.. I have no idea how difficult this would be or if enough people would want copies to make it financially practical.

Just curious...

(FWIW: Although it's outside my skill set, there are scripts available that'll download an entire site then strip-out user defined duplicate and/or extraneous data. With Terabyte and larger drives so cheap, a DIY'er geek would find it not too difficult or expensive.)

Thanks Art.

Converting to PDFs would be even more work, so no, I am not contemplating this service.

Like I said before though, we are not taking this forum off line - all will still be available, searchable, etc.
